A raccoon crossed my path on a remote snow-covered road in Hokkaido. The small creature was afflicted with mange, a skin disease caused by parasitic mites that results in hair loss, infections and, in severe cases, blindness and death. Although the condition occurs naturally in the wild, it can be exacerbated by people feeding wild animals (as they congregate for food and spread diseases while in close proximity). This case was amongst the worst I'd seen in person. He had lost a significant amount of hair, seemed to have difficulty opening his eyes, and could not walk without stumbling and shuffling off course. As he looked back and met my eyes, I heard him cry in a heartbreaking manner. Animals in such a state are dangerous and should not be approached, but it nonetheless grieved me to know that the pitiable creature was not likely long for this earth.
